The Observatory is Celebrating 175 Years!

Thursday November 8, from 6-9pm

Monastery Event Center

The Cincinnati Observatory, the nation’s oldest public Observatory, will be commemorating its 175th Anniversary with a celebration at the Monastery Event Center on November 8. The Center was built adjacent to the site of where the original Observatory once stood in Mount Adams.

The Observatory is a thriving educational resource as well as a National Historic Landmark, serving 35,000 people annually through their work in schools as well as public programs. “The Observatory is excited to celebrate this milestone with the community,” shared Executive Director Craig Niemi. “We rarely ‘toot our own horn’, but this is an opportunity to not only tell our incredible story, but also celebrate with those who have supported our work.”

Sponsors of the event include the Carol Ann and Ralph V. Haile Jr./US Bank Foundation, University of Cincinnati, Xavier University, UBS, Bahl & Gaynor, and Icon Solar. The Observatory’s fundraising goal for this, their first offsite fundraising event, is $50,000. “We’ve been so pleased with the response of the corporate community in supporting our event,” shared Development Director Anna Hehman. “Especially since we’d like to use proceeds from this fundraiser to increase the number of underserved students we bring to the Observatory for a field trip.”

This evening of astronomy, history and culture will include hors d’oeuvres, full bar, a short presentation, and telescope viewing (weather permitting).

The event will be emceed by John Lomax, WKRC-TV Anchor, and will include a brief presentation
by noted Cincinnati historian Dan Hurley.
