“The Dynamic Sun: How NASA is revealing our Sun’s secrets”

At Goddard Space Flight Center, Steele Hill has had a ringside seat for the past ten years as a new generation of solar study spacecraft are ushering in the “golden age’ of solar study. The SOHO, TRACE, and STEREO missions are creating a nearly continuous and richly detailed record of solar activity that is allowing scientists around the world to develop a greater understanding of our star, in fact, of all stars. This presentation on the Sun will showcase their best images and movies, ranging from coronal mass ejections to kamikaze comets, sunspots to break away prominences. Of special interest to visitors will be 3D movies and images of the Sun taken by STEREO (3D viewing glasses will be provided).

• In 1996 Steele Hill joined the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center as its media person who handles education and outreach for SOHO. He has developed numerous posters and other print products, produced its videos and motion cards, worked with museum exhibit and planetarium show developers, responded to media requests, coordinated educational programs, created the educational Dynamic Sun CD, and generated original illustrations and composite images for print and the web. He is also the “man behind the scenes” for SOHO’s web feature, Pick of the Week. In short, he does whatever he can to promote SOHO and its science. He recently joined the STEREO mission team in a similar role. He is also co-author (with Michael Carlowicz) of The Sun, a photo book on the Sun (Abrams, 2006).
  
  
• He received his Ph.D. in English from the University of Maryland in 1977. He worked at the U.S. House of Representatives as an editor for its computer support organization. He eventually became its desktop publishing specialist, managed its graphic support team, and led the training and support for desktop publishing software.
