Beginner's Stargaze
Sorry - SOLD OUT!
Next Beginner's Stargaze is tentatively scheduled for May 25th.
Calling all beginning stargazers! Want some hands-on practice using a portable telescope? Join us for an outdoor stargaze on the Observatory’s grounds. You can bring your own telescope if you have one… or, “rent” one of ours for the evening! A brief presentation will introduce you to the basics of how to use a telescope, and the best targets to look for in the sky that night. Simple star charts will be provided. The rest of the evening will be spent outside viewing (weather permitting). You’re in charge of your own telescope – or bring a friend and share – but staff and volunteers will be available to help as needed!
Costs:

Put the entire universe on your computer.There are several great, free sky simulation programs that can help you reach for the stars, and keep up with what's up in the sky. This class will cover installation and use of free downloadable planetarium type programs as well as a live tutorial on how to get the most out of them. Then we will cover the best astronomy apps for your mobile devices. Please bring your laptops and/or mobile devices to class (others will be provided if you don't have them). Saturn!
Saturn is perhaps the prettiest of all the planets with its rings and moons. A guaranteed wow view! We will discuss how our understanding of Saturn and its moons has changed from the days of Galileo to the Voyager and Cassini spacecraft missions. Learn about the disappearing rings phenomenon and Galileo’s puzzlement. Learn about the recently discovered ice geysers on Saturn’s moon Enceladus and the possibility of liquid water. If weather permits, you will see this beautiful planet through the observatory telescope.

The magnificent planet, most breathtaking object in the universe, Saturn takes center stage at the Cincinnati Observatory for Saturnday.
And you can see it for yourself.
There will be viewing of Saturn through the historic 1845 and 1904 telescopes (weather permitting), running talks, and tours of the buildings. If clear, portable telescopes will be set up outside to show visitors the Moon and stars as well.

Beginner's Stargaze
Want some hands-on practice using a portable telescope?
Join us for an outdoor stargaze on the Observatory's grounds. You can bring your own telescope if you have one or "rent" one of ours for the evening! A brief presentation will introduce you to the basics of how to use a telescope, and the best targets to look for in the sky that night. Simple star charts will be provided. The rest of the evening will be spent outside viewing (weather permitting). You're in charge of your own telescope - or bring a friend and share - but staff and volunteers will be available to help as needed!
Note: If you bring your own telescope, please know how to set it up - this night is mostly for viewing practice! If you need help learning to set up your telescope, please call the Observatory to arrange a one-on-one telescope help session.
Costs:
Admission - $7 / person
Telescope Rental - $10 / telescope (Free for Members)
Binocular Rental - $5 / binoculars

Mercury, Venus, and king of the planets Jupiter, grace the early evening sky. A great sight even without a telescope but we'll try to take a peek at Jupiter through our historic scope too.
No reservations needed.
