  Mt. Adams' 170th Birthday
How a telescope named a Cincinnati community.

November 10th marks the 170th anniversary of the laying of the Observatory's cornerstone by John Quincy Adams and the naming of the hill upon which the Observatory was built to "Mt. Adams." Celebrate this Cincinnati milestone at the "new" Observatory in Mt. Lookout.

Discover how the citizens of Cincinnati founded the nation's first public astronomical observatory and why John Quincy Adams was so interested in what was happening here in Cincinnati. Explore why we had to move the telescope from Mt. Adams to Mt. Lookout in 1873. Mt. Lookout is also named for the Observatory and is 140 years old this year. That's right, two of Cincinnati's seven hills are named because of our telescope.

Whether you're an astronomer, engineer or history buff, you'll find the Observatory has something for all.

$7 per person, Kids under 18 Free.

Comets: The Anaasází of the Solar System
Throughout history, comets have held an almost mystical fascination for us humans. The unexpected appearances of these celestial objects have influenced politics, wars, and religions. Current scientific debate suggests that the very existence of life on Earth is the result of our planet's encounters with comets in the ancient past. In this course, we will discuss the nature and historical importance of these fascinating creatures from deep space. What are they? From where do they originate? Why did our ancestors deem them so important? How might they be responsible for life on Earth? And are we to be visited by "The comet of the century" this December? Learn the answers to these and other questions about these fascinating objects.

Terry Flesch is an astronomer and a presenter at the Cincinnati Observatory Center

Presented by UC Communiversity.
