| Stonelick Lake State Park hosts The Friends of the Observatory's
(FOTO's) Dark Sky Viewing Site. The park is situated far enough from light
polluted suburbs to allow for dark skies, yet close enough to the
Cincinnati Metropolitan area to attract many interested stargazers. On a
monthly basis, usually close to the New Moon, amateur astronomers set up a
variety of telescopes, allowing the public to view the many wonders of the
night sky. The event is free and open to the public. This is a great opportunity to view planets, galaxies, nebulae, star clusters and stars. It is also a good opportunity to see numerous types of telescopes in action, ask questions and become involved in the fascinating world of astronomy. Most amateur astronomers are more than willing to have you look through their telescopes as well as explain astronomical concepts, from basic to complex. Throughout the year we also hold special event stargazes, updates are posted on the Observatory website: http://www.cincinnatiobservatory.org/stonelickblog.html The first date listed is usually past the 3rd quarter moon, the second date is in case the first is rained / clouded out. We've been setting up around dusk, but there are grills, picnic tables, & beach nearby if you'd like to arrive early.
